I guess they can't say Sanda has weak strikes anymore, after the 56kg fighter opened a gash on his opponent's head with an elbow strike and the 75kg former King of Sanda knocked out his Thai opponent in the 2nd round with a high kick.

As Sanda becomes comparable to Muay Thai in terms of striking power, I personally think the added advantage of throws and takedowns, once discovered by the mainstream MMA schools, will cause it to eventually eclipse Muay Thai in terms of being the staple art for striking. After all, if anyone ever said BJJ had a weakness, it was takedowns, and Sanda, with its takedowns presented in a format that allows for strikes (as a contrast to the majority of sport grappling styles), presents a viable challenge to MT's dominance of mixed striking.

I wouldn't count out the thais, now. Give them a challenge and they'd definitely adapt.

I think this rivalry is a good thing, it makes both much better than if they had no clear "enemy".

Actually I've seen that before. Take a look at Cung Le's last fight if you want to see Muay Thai get owned.

Getting 2nd and 3rd class fighters to deal with the best Sanda guys from China just won't work. If anybody remembers, Japanese Kickboxers also beat up the Thais in last year's King's Cup. These days everybody seems to be beating up the Thais because they keep sending their upstart or lesser fighters to play with the foreigners. This is not a good trend and I hope the Thais do something to improve the situation soon.

Same old same old. There's always a home field advantage to these things. Partly rules, partly just WHO gets to fight.

AA, yeah, so it's not the Wayne Gretzkys and Michael Jordans of Muay Thai fighting these Sanda guys. But it remains that this contest was on Thai turf (so it's not like there was a pro-Chinese bias), and it proves, the caliber of the Sanda fighters regardless, that Sanda can stand as an equal to Muay Thai in terms of striking.
