Is holding your elbows up comfortable?

What I mean is, some times when I see people take a "boxing" stance who are untrained, they'll have their elbows up and out, like they're trying to fly, instead of over their ribs. I constantly have to remind kids and some newbies at my karate class to keep their elbows down, as well.

Now, I started MA when I was 8 years old, so I can't remember anything except trying to emulate Bruce Lee with my fighting stance. Does it feel more natural to keep your elbows up like you're trying to fly away?

Elbows up allows you to begin windmilling earlier.

The elbows naturally flare out. To keep them tucked in requires a conscious effort and contraction of the shoulders.

Edit: I say this with my avatar being a prime example of elbow retardation.

My karate experience has trained me to drop my hands rather than raise my elbows and try to fly

If you're familiar with the level of untrained elbow flare, you would say that your elbows are down in the picture. Imagine what you would look like if you were challenging someone to punch you in the ribs. I've seen it in a number of highschool fights.

much more comfortable than getting punched in the ribs or kicked in the head... IMHO that is.

I think when untrained people tense up to fight, their shoulders and traps contract in such a way to bring up the elbows to the sides.
