You are certainly not overweight then. 90kg is about 190lbs, and for your height, that's not overweight at all. So that's good news.

So it is important that he get familiarized with how his body is going to react when he adds lifting on top of his BJJ.
I would say, keep it short and intense three times a week. Get in, 30-45 minutes of lifting, and get out, with small, weekly increments of weight (5 to 10lbs). If, after 2 or 3 weeks, he doesn't experience any detriment to his BJJ training, then he can increase the amount of time he spends in the gym (either by increasing the time of each workout session and/or the frequency during the week.)
Cuz I luv squats :tongue3: Seriously answer: when people begin to lift with the purpose of gaining mass, squats are the way to go. People can do them several times a week, for a period of 5-6 weeks. After that, they need to drop the frequency or intensity. But the main reason, I think, is that squats helps the body grow when combined with other compound exercises.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris -
