Avoiding it is kind of tricky. Recovering faster isn't:
    1. Apply cold right when you pull the muscle.
    2. Apply warmth later on.
    3. Light/gentle stretching.

What he said, ice it and rest it. Take aspirin or ibuprofen to ameliorate the pain and reduce the swelling (if there is any).

These kind of things can't be 100% avoided, but you can reduce the chances of it by warming up and stretching prior to doing anything that may cause a pulled muscle.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

Do dynamic streches with you warm up, not static stretchs. Static streching is for a warm down, or streching only workout. Static Streching , when done with alot of effort, can weaken a muscle temporarily. go to stadion.com, my friend. That guy is the man, when it comes to stretching info.

Acupuncture on trigger points is awesome. If you can't find an acupuncturist to do it for you, palpate for a tight "ball" in the sore muscle and stick a sharp object into the center of it. You'll figure it out eventually.

Well I guess you could just massage the trigger point...

Oh, and Muscle Energy Stretching / Techniques [MET] works well to.

    Static: splits
Dynamic: gently swinging the leg up almost like an axe kick

...did you just advocate that someone do acupuncture on themselves?
