thaclient, where do you live in Miami? North Miami/Miami Lakes, South West, Kendall, Miami Beach? If you live north of Miami Lakes, you may want to check a few schools just north of Miramar in Broward (ATT Hollywood via turnpike, Luis Gutierrez' SBG and South Florida Boxing via i75, America TKA, and a Machado branch at Haganah USA via via turnpike then 595.)

I think there is Team Valverde (ATT South Beach Miami) plus other grappling/MMA teams in Miami. Unfortunately, as we both know, traffic in Miami fucking sucks - if you live on or north of Hialeah and have cclose to the turnpike or i75, you can go to schools in Broward in 30 miinutes or less. Otherwise, you may be stuck with 45 to 90 minutes traffic at a minimum. :tongue6:

    -- EDIT --

Depending on your work schedule, a 45 minute drive to FAA may not be that bad.

    smillard:

I'm pretty far south -- just south of Palmetto Bay.

I know the Gracie's are up on Miami Beach.
There is an ATT affiliate here (on Bird Rd.): http://bocajiujitsu.com/
or the Avellan brothers out by FIU.

The more I think about it the better I would probably be to just make the drive. I wonder if it is worth checking out the first link that I posted and see how his instruction is.

All the way south? That's bad man.

That's one of the nice things about Broward. There are a lot of good gyms there (just as in Miami), but they are far more accessible due to the lower amount of traffic. Miami's highway system just sucks!!!

Give the closer place a try and see. They should give a free try-out class or something. Heck, at the school I am right now (ATT Hollywood), they gave me three weeks for free!!!

If the grappling/mma classes are good, then just go for it and ignore all the other stuff. Sometimes MA schools have to do the kiddie (or adult bs) classes to pay the bills, with more respectable stuff on the side.

OR... see if you can get a few trial classes at the JKD place, and a few trial classes with the Avellans. Then compare and see if the JKD place is good enough to stay there, or if you'd be better off making the drive.

BTW, I don't know what the **** the Avellans did to their former website, but it's just fucking horrible now. So many testimonials it freaking looks like Matt Furey's website. :icon_conf

    Macho:

I told you I was south :sad1:. I think your suggestion is probably the best suggestion.

Come summer time my schedule will open up a bit so by then I should know if Hybrid Martial Arts Academy is the real deal or McDojo/bullshido. If that is the case then I'll make the drive.

I did a few classes at FFA a while ago but got out of it when I had a family issue going on. They are absolutely first class and amazing instructors. I have nothing but high praise for them and if they were closer I'd train there without hesitation.

re: the website. I wish to God I knew what they did because now it looks like a total McDojo, which it is not. I did notice that they are open 24hrs a day which is really interesting and could possibly solve my traffic issues.

thaclient, dude. If you are driving north via the Palmetto, you may want to check one of the ATT branches in Miami, just a few blocks east of Palmetto and Bird Rd (40st):

    http://bocajiujitsu.com/
    7396 SW 40 St, Miami, FL 33155 - 305.766.0607

There is also a Machado branch on 9000 NW and 25 Street (west of Palmetto and 25 St NW) - the address may not be valid anymore, so just give them a call (305-772-0158). Keep in mind that driving a bit north on the Palmetto may be faster than driving west (.ie. to get to FFA).

    -- EDIT --

Just saw your post. FFA is good, but their website really sucks as it may give the impression they are a shitty mcdojo. Bad choice of web content IMO.

I train at a place that is quite similar - click my school link, to yours. So I think you have a good program

However your website is horrendous. I would seriously suggest spending some money and getting a professional in to do a nice one. People unfortunately judge a book by its cover.

Boca is an awesome instructor. My teacher is a brown belt of his. He just came up to our place a month or so ago and has awesome jits! I would totally recommend his school.

No offense JKDLEO, but if all we cared about were the qualifications on his website and took them at face value, this thread would have died. Coping and pasting the same information doesn't help much. Now if you could provide some details about the classes, what is taught during the classes, how the instructor deals with the students and vise versa, then we may be on to something.

I do have a specific question for you though:

Does this instructor teach his hybrid style in all the classes or does he instruct specific styles in specific classes?

Thanks for the info dude! Boca isn't necessarily all that far away from my work so I could go to classes after work.

Machine: Good posting... and exactly what I am trying to ascertain. I have not written off HMA, but I would really like the answers to the questions you pose.
