I've always been confused on what San Shou/Sanda is exactly. As a sport, it is just like Muay Thai, exept throws are allowed. As a system, it is freestyle fighting with a CMA base. Is this correct?

It is not a system or style on its own, just a ruleset. Sorta like MMA or UFC. Usually it is fighters from different CMA styles fighting in sanshou matches.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

    IKF San Shou "GENERAL" Rules

    1. Kicks are allowed to the inside and outside of the legs as well as the upper body.
    2. Knee and elbow strikes are not allowed. (In some cases, knees may be allowed)
    3. All types of Judo & Wrestling Throws are Legal In San Shou.
    4. Fighters have 5 seconds after clinch to execute a takedown, throw or sweep or they are separated by the center referee.
    5. The bout may take place on either a raised platform with no ropes or in a boxing ring with ropes.

IKF San Shou Rules much more complete set, including scoring.

Those rules sound a lot better than what I have seen. EG. no leg kicks and only 2 second clinch.

They are the rules used in UK amateur stuff too. The rules you're talking about sound like they've been influenced by american kickboxing.
