    Hell yeah! Hell no!

To hold myself accountable: Boxing sparring video (light-medium contact)

    I'm 5'9, 195. Partner is 5'7ish and 150, so pretty big difference.

As I said, contact isn't very exciting, and it's sparring, so we're both trying out some things. He's the lesser experienced of the both of us, so I spend some time feeding him a few shots and go way too light a lot (partially why I'm so used to arm punching. Going to make a habit of good form with pulled punches rather than crappy form for reduced power).

I lean back way too much, don't draw my punches back nearly fast enough, drop my hands, move backwards, and arm punch most of my straight punches. I'm also pretty flat footed, which most likely isn't helping, and my body shots generally suck. If you see anything else, be sure to let me know, and let me know what I can do to fix it (constructive criticism is always better than just plain criticism)

    Enough stalling

My problem with headgear is that I have to completely untuck my chin if I want to be able to see anything. Is this a common problem, or do I just have crappy gear and need to upgrade?

    Thanks for the criticism.

I wrote a longer post, but the forum fucked it off.

Anyway. Like someone said, get a headgear. And get some shoes.

It would be best to find a gym where you can spar full on with many people, otherwise you'll develope many bad habits of technique and pace.

Until then you should do 1-2 drills on the heavy bag and read up on jack dempseys book about footwork and bag drills.

I absolutely loath most headgear. Really screws up my vision. I find that some headgear are actually much more dangerous than none at all because of the tendancy to not see a punch coming, which of course is going to be much more damaging. I think most gyms just make people wear headgear because of insurance liabilities rather than actual safety concerns.

I had shoes, but he didn't. When the situation was reversed (no shoes for me, other guy had shoes), I had my toenail stomped off and was out of training for a few weeks. I decided to make things even.

And I've trained at a gym where I can spar full on with many people, I'm just not there ATM. University with no car sucks. When I go active, I'm joining up with the boxing team.

But thanks for the advise. I've been doing some supplemental reading and training on the side.

I understand that you wanna go light and everything, but both of you guys are being way too timid. You're sort of slowly plodding around exchanging a punch or two and slowly backing off. Spring in, flurry, spring out. You can go fast without going hard. Sparring at this pace is almost pointless unless you're an absolute beginner. Try to throw no less than 4 punches each time you engage.

I'll keep in mind the combos. It's been a while since he's sparred, so this was capturing us getting back into the rythum.

I'm definitely gonna work on being able to throw fast without throwing hard. It's always been an issue of mine, and as such results in really crappy sparring when we go light. Thanksfully, when I'm actually at my club, I can go harder/faster/against people my size or bigger, but this was all I got on tape, so I figure I can at least see the holes I got when I'm going light and fix them for when I'm going heavy.

I'll hopefully be sparring this dude again today, with some headgear/harder blows, so I'll keep in mind everything that's been said. Much thanks!
