Right, because you can do a jumping jack with such advanced variations that you do three "jacks" off of one jump (sarcasm); whereas with the jump rope, you can progress to that advanced level (no sarcasm).

Having a mirror in front of you so you can see your feet helps. Music with a good stable beat helps as well, something like Tom Petty or hip hop.
Jump with both feet together at the same time until you get good at that, then kick one foot out front as you do two hops with the other foot, then reverse and repeat. Eventually you'll be dancing with it.

I only ever learned by jumping barefoot that way the pain of whipping your feet will motivate you to not get hit by the rope.
