    Try reading comprehension? He's anything but a hippie. Listens to underground hip hop, punk and progressive rap, has short hair, and thinks pot makes you stupid. I guess he rebelled against his old man.

    as to the original point--if your teenage son wants to see the U.S., and you're worried about his safety--wouldn't it be a whole lot more practical to buy him a rail pass or a bus pass (or even a used car), rather than figuring out ways to arm him for hitchhiking & rail hopping?

    I'm not aware of any complete US rail passes (or bus passes for that manner). A used car would be the ticket, maybe an older volvo wagon, so he could sleep in it as well. Buy it in CA, then drive to NY and sell it (or vice versa).

    As for weapons, if he is acting like a jerk, it doesn't matter if it is legal or not. As the cops I know say, "He might beat the rap, but he won't beat the ride."

    Last summer he was in a head on car wreck and I've offered to buy him a volvo, a bus ticket, and so forth. But he wants to experience the "real life" or something. He had this (Woody Guthrie) as his screen background for a long time:

    I kept the pic small as to not mess up, but the sticker says. "this machine kills facists."

    He's gotten fast with flicking his hopefully adequate and legal knife. Me and mom will just have to worry.

    they're not cheap, but they're a whole lot cheaper than a bust or a beatdown:

    In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;
    By the relief office, I'd seen my people.
    As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,
    Is this land made for you and me?
    As I went walking, I saw a sign there,
    And on the sign there, It said "no trespassing."
    But on the other side, it didn't say nothing!
    That side was made for you and me.
