    How Many Belts are Enuf?

At my TKD dojang we have 10 belt ranks from white to black. My son and I were looking into the window of a Karate dojo at a nearby town while killing some time and saw that they had 10 colored belts on the wall too. Holy freakin crap! How many belts are enuf? I thought that TKD was the only belt factory MA!

I thought that the origin of the black belt was that it was a white belt that'd been worn so much that it got darker with age?

Anway, what's the MA with the least amount of belts? Or is it just Moo Ty that doesn't have belts, just ass whoopins?

You only need one belt to hold your pants up.

It would cool if a school only had one belt, and you had to kick the teachers ass to get it.

we use strips for each belt to keep the costs down. You only pay $10 for your belt and test.

Nothing wrong with that, we $45 a belt test and it's me, my wife and our three kids. So we get killed at belt test time.

Nope, that's a fabrication. It makes sense, but it's not why it's there. It's there because the Japanese did basically the same thing, except with the brown and red belts switched.

Actually different stripes would be a really nice way to do it, but most people are happier with $40 belts than with lame-looking stripes.

I have a standard TKD system:
white, yellow, OJ, green, blue, purple, brown, red, advanced red. then we have a bodan belt (red on top, black on bottom), during which time you take free stripe tests and basically go up through the entire curriculum again, albeit much faster and hopefully at a higher level. Then of course there's black belt. We don't really count the bodans as "color belts," so I'd say we have nine.

At the Muay Thai gym I train at, not belts. Show up and train. Same goes for the place I train Baji Kung Fu.
