Black History Month - Black MA that Inspired you.

Since it's Black History month, I think it would be appropriate to give props to the black Martial Artist(also boxers) that inspired us.

For me it was Mohammed Ali - for the way he punched and his foot work and for his courage.

Early in my MA life, I was actually inspired by a Kuk Sool master. Kwan Jang Nym Marlin Sims seemed to represent everything that TMA's should be. He trains hard and alive. It's a shame more of the Kuk Sool community doesn't follow his methods of training. Just don't hold his Blackbelt and TKD Times covers against him. :toothy12:

Man, I always admired Ron Van Clief. Maybe it was because my Dad admired him. I don;t know about his tenth dan red belt ranking in his own style, but he climbed into the cage at UFC at 51 years of age - he's a fighter for sure.

Steve James. This man made it a habit to save that idiot Dudikoff's ass in every movie. Plus, "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka!!" is a stone cold classic. RIP.

Personally, as in a black ma I knew and inspired me? Mestre Dondi Enxu of Capoeira Malandragem. Even though he's a capoeirista, he inspired me a great deal because he never claimed Capoeira as a martial art. He crossed trained extensivley in Muay Thai and Kali, and he always tore apart the capoeiristas trying to do the flashy jumpy crap. He would say, "Damnit Jorge! If you keep flipping around like that somebody, most likely me, is going to go over there and punch you in the face! Now knock that dumbass flashy **** off!"

Excellent thread!! I had three men inspire me on way to learning to defend myself. First would be my Dad who taught me how to box. Then would be brother khafa who introduced me to Tai chi, and brother Ali who introduced me to Karate.

I am not a student of capoeira but the benefits I see in the style are flexibility, balance and agility.
