if you had to teach just ten "self-defense" moves to someone, what would they be?
i know i'm opening up the terrible self-defense can of worms, so let me try and clarify what i'm looking for:
i'm not asking what the best art for self-defense is. i'm talking about "basic delivery systems" like matt thornton talks about. relatively simple and isolated "moves" or techniques that you would consider most essential in surviving a fight in which weapons or multiple opponents might be involved.
(obviously "running" is everyone's first choice of technique , but we'll say it's not possible for whatever reason.)
i'm asking for ten techniques, meaning not only a mechanical understanding of how to perform the technique but also enough "alive" experience to know when and where to apply the technique.
here's an ad-hoc (and not seriously thought-out) example of the kind of thing i'm looking for:
1. basic open-hand slap
2. the sprawl
3. bridging and rolling
4. push kick
5. rear naked choke
this question is inspired by a discussion i had with an acquaintance of mine recently, who opines that wrestling and jiujitsu are your best options for self-defense. he says you should focus on learning some basic takedowns, the rear naked choke, the mailbox choke, the armbar, and the heel hook.
i should add that he has years of boxing experience, but still recommends wrestling and jiujitsu over boxing for self defense. i don't know how i feel about that, personally, so i wanted to get some opinions and maybe some pertinent links out of you guys.
so, which ten techniques would *you* most want to rely on or apply in a fight?
if you think you just need five, even better. think of five more you can *imagine* needing.
headbutt x 10? headbutt-jitsu?
Apply foot to ass. Repeat as necessary.
Should only need the one!

I recommend doing this in any potential threatening situation
1. Eye Gouge
2. Testicle kick
3. Ear slap
4. Sucker punch
6. Neck Break
7. Atomic Elbow drop
8. German Suplex
9. Trigger pull
10. Foot-to-ass technique.
Imagine if you did 8 German Suplex's in a row. You would be like a god among men
1. Foward thrust kick
4. ability to grapple, like how to grab. I guess I'll call it basic grab.
5. "soft" palm blocks
6. puching? like strait up punch, hammer, etc.
7. basic takedowns
8. roundhouse kick
9. rear kick (if you see a attacker behind you, a good one of these to the groin will prevent the whole fight lol)
10. basic, small joint locks, such as wrist.
go ahead and hate if you want, but thats what I came up with in two minutes.
Only one testicle kick? As Bas Rutten says: 'Everyone underestimates the kick to the balls.'
