Atlanta, GA - Black Knight Martial Arts

The dojang prides itself in a practical approach to Hapkido training.

Weekday classes are 1.5 hours and focus on one of the following:
    • Throws/Rolls (yudo throws, breakfalls, rolling, etc)
    • Locks (small, large joint manipulation - wrists, elbow, shoulder, etc)
    • Wrestling (basic grappling)
    • Weapons (nuchucks, short stick, knife, short sword, etc)
    • Kicking (TKD style, plus low kicks, shins, knees)
    • Striking (vertical fist, elbows, palm strike, etc, combos)
    • Basics (stances, fundamental "traditional" techniques, theory)
    • Self Defense (applying techniques in scenario based exercises)
Weekend classes are "open" - focused on what the students want to learn.

In terms of mechanics, I don't like the focus on vertical punching and the open handed (as opposed to closed fist) fighting "L" stance. However, from time to time, stand-up and wrestling sparring takes place. Higher belts are able to do more full contact stand-up and aggressive wrestling. The breadth of the curriculum is a major advantage over, say, a regular TKD school. Overall, the school provides a good mix of practical and traditional martial arts training.

The instructors at the dojang tend to be friendly and knowledgeable. Some are better at demonstrating and teaching the techniques than others. Unfortunately, some are also more arrogant as well. Classes are also offered at Georgia Tech's Campus Recreation Center. But, since the instructor(s) are 1st dans, the classes aren't as good as the ones at the dojang.

Prices range from $10 / class to $125 / month for unlimited classes.

Care to write a little more on this? A one sentence review isn't really acceptable.
