This is a great announcment from USA Judo. The new executive admininstrator is doing a great job of getting Judo into the community. I believe we are in for some good times ahead with the sport.

I didn't see anywhere in the article listing when the tryouts would be. Do you know the dates? I have a Vegas trip coming up late this year or early next year.
Also how does someone qualify for the tryouts? I am really not up on my U.S. Judo knowledge.
If I can plan my trip around this event I will definitely go see it.

Correct the top 5 competitors at the time are invited to the trials.
You earn points by attending and placing in the top 3 at tournaments throughout the year in the US and abroad. Tournaments are given a rating according to difficulty level and points are adjusted accordingly. You lose points for an event after 1 year and a day. Judo players are ranked according to competition level. A+ being the olympic level all the way down to E level. In general its a system setup to give the advantage to the person who can compete more, win more and earn the most points. Its a pretty fair system and in order to be number 5 in the US and get to be the team rep at your wieght you have to beat the number 2 guy , then the winner of number 3 and 4 and then beat the number 1 guy twice, if I remember correctly. So you better hope you have your A++ game that day and number 1 is sick as a dog.
There was some contraversy about the selection process over the years so this method is being used now.

Thanks for the breakdown on how points are acquired. I hope that this event is going on when I go to Vegas.

Most of these will be on the team but that may have changed this year.
Judo is only gentle for the guy on top.

I'm probably going to be in BEijing at that time, so If I'm lucky I might get to see some live olympic Judo :))
