By "protrude" do you mean like a pro bodybuilder's?
That's called "distension," as in, "WOW! look at the distended abdomen on that guy!"
Typically associated with moronically low bodyfat levels and steroid abuse.
Your genetics will determine exactly how much "bulge" and "cut" your abs will get. Keep working, add some incline and/or weight to your crunches, and watch what you eat.

That's because high reps typically work endurance as opposed to hypertrophy (what you seem to want, although I can't see why) or strength. You need to do fewer reps to get strength and size gains. However, a good programme with all your usual compound lifts will get you all the ab strength and size you will need.
