i have a couple of Smith and Wessons....

I'm not impressed with their quality....but then again, they were cheap, so u get what u pay for.

I never rely on them much. I leave them around the house for easy access, but thats about it

Some of my best friends have S&W folders... ;-) (besides Spyderco Police and SOG Desert daggers...)
They can serve as everyday pocketknives, the steel isn't anything extra, they're usually made in China, etc...
Like Hank above said - if you're out for a cheap knife which still got a recognizable brand name on it, they might suit you...

Spyderco Endura or Delica. They're on version 4 now, very well made. You can even get them with the Emerson "Wave" feature for reeeeeally fast opening out of the pocket. And yes, they're fully ambidextrous.

    I really need one...or two...

Last week I picked up my business partner's brand new Columbia River M16 -13LE SRT knife and threw it at a ship lathe covered wall. I bent the tip doing so and he proceeded to snap a small piece of the tip off trying to straighten it with a pair of pliers (don't ask). So I ordered him a new one last night.

I should probably note that he and I have been throwing knives at walls since we were roommates fifteen years ago. Consequently we seldom meet walls that like us.

I've been wanting a new pocket folder myself. So I pulled up this thread and looked it over. When I checked out Emerson Knives' site I saw they have a new line called Hard Wear knives. I bought the Endeavor and the Reliant.

That same friend told me to check out Mel Pardue's knives some time ago. While I realize that Mr. Pardue's knives are just a wee bit out of the OP's price range, they are nontheless gorgeous to behold. Enjoy.

The WAVE'd Spyderco's are great. I carry a waved Endura almost all the time.
Also, if you're partial to the Spyderco rescue knives, then they come waved as well.
At about $50 on ebay they just can't be beat.

... and on the Spydercos the wave hook is large enough to use as a bottle opener.

I've had my Benchmade ATS-34 AFCK for many many years now. Mine's the black coated one with 50/50 blade, but I'd prefer the plain edge.

I love it to bits, it's my favourite folder. I've also owned many other folders from Gerber, Cold Steel, REKAT and SOG but none comes close. Cold Steel folders feel cheap and unbalanced (very blade heavy), REKAT tanto folder rusted and froze up on me and is now junk. SOG & Gerber - no special feelings about them.

    Why I love the AFCK:
    - ATS-34 blade takes a very fine and sharp edge, the thin blade helps I think.
    - thin blade makes it very practical for many chores
    - super smooth action after so many years, with no maintenance from me, except washing
    - good secure lockup
    - very nice balance, and weight

    You sharpen one edge only.

Look at the blade, the factory grind is obvious.

Sharpen often, before the edge is dull.

Personally, I prefer a non-serrated edge, but then I make my own knives.

A good "cutting blade" will run 56-58 Rc hardness.

Lower will dull faster - harder risks chipping or breakage.

Look at Gerber's for one choice. You get what you pay for.

I would recommend buying a Spyderco Delica or if you want something with a bit of a longer blade a Spyderco Endura. I actually bought a cheap Smith & Wesson knife this week and its not that bad and they have a lifetime warranty.
