Yeh i love technical discussion contrasting methods but it seems to me that some kung fuers like to throw around chinese terms and then feel smug when I dont know what the hell a pi chaun choo choo is.

I can't see this being all that different than "chili dog", "mission control", "plum sweep" "brabo choke", "ippon seonage", "kesa gatame", "sasae tsurikomi ashi" etc.

... heck, how many people coming on Bullshido still ask "what is a LARP?"

If you want to wade into a sub-culture, learning a few of the terms shouldn't be a big deal. However, I agree that CMAers shouldn't take the "french" attitude towards those struggling with what is essentially just grammar and syntax. A friendly "SEARCH FUNCTION FUCKTARD" will do.

yeh all that ****, I can't understand it either. If I want to talk about a technique thats execution is not obvious from the name then I'd be so kind as to describe what it is at least a little bit :)

Well I take that back I know what mission control and a brabo choke is.

That does bring up a good point. To use Pi Chuan as an example...

Xing Yi people know what it is it. It is just a term. It is no different than using a term like "uppercut"

Think about it for a second, what the hell would uppercut mean to someone. Sure it is common sense to us because we have seen it in boxing. Ask my mom was an uppercut is, she will tell you it is a punch, she doesnt know more than that.

So when I say Pi Chuan or beng Chuan or wood or the like, it isnt to be mystic or mysterious. It is a common frame of reference.

There IS not term for Pi Chuan, or Pi for short. We dont use the terms to be smarter or the like, at least the works I have worked with are not like that.

Just as uppercut is an easier description than describing the punch

No question and I might argue that people that wouldnt, well, maybe they dont really know either.

But also explain exactly how to throw an uppercut in words on this forum so everyone can understand. It is harder than it seems! So in many cases, it could be the medium that is the hinderence.

Yeh but once again you all know what an uppercut is. I'd be surprised if anyone on this site didnt know what an uppercut was.

I'm going to guess that 90% or better of the people on the site dont know what a pi chaun is.

hell, i still dont know what it is because I only saw a picture of an old dude doing his hands in a funky pose.
