Both of my current MMA classes take place in council leisure centres. I haven't seen the full list of sports and orgs but maybe wrestling is included separate from martial arts? That would provide an opt-out clause for most grapplers I guess. Even so, I don't like this.

Is it possible for individual practioners or the national organisations of other countries to contribute anything to this?

Based on how governments often look at other countries for inspiration in various matters, it is at least a possibility that something like this might find its way to other countries as well (particularily if it appears to simplify administration and regulation, i.e. save money, from a government point of view).

There has been some similar screwups by the governments here is sweden regarding martial arts and how it is allowed to be practiced.
The thought behind it is actually good in theory, but they have let non-MAs do much of the deciding, and the report the decicions are based on contain a lot of emotionally charged discrediting of MAs in general that has little basis in fact.

Anyway, based on this, if you brits think the international MA community can aid you in some way, please say so.

    whoo!

This legislation is an unworkable piece of red tape.
At best, it will create a new niche market for private, general purpose dojo operators with halls to hire.
In any case, it's one of those laws that will just be quietly forgotten about. People who run council facilities will forget all about it a few weeks after getting the memo, and get right back to hiring halls out to White Tiger gung fu and whoever else.
Not to say it isn't an extremely irritating waste of our money, conceived by unsackable, overpaid brown shoed fuckwits who know nothing of the Martial Arts.

    Thanks for the merge.

Dog, don't stop bashing chunners, when they're able to fight back, then you can worry about stopping ;-)

Got some details back from the coaches I've spoken to, and they say that although this is directly for renting out council (Local Authority, LA) owned property, one of the theories/worries is that it could spread to independant gyms who rent property - the problem being the council may refuse them their rental agreement, or intervene with insurance purposes or some such sucky **** that would stop them from operating.

Glad to see this has sparked a lot more from people on here, stuff tends to get "fixed" when Bullshido gets involved :D

The fencing guy at my place can't find the blurb he was sent by our local council or the stuff he was sent by his fencing org.
    Sorry.
Where there is only a choice between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence.
