If you consult the source page--Dr. Seuss Went to War--you will see that appeasement was a major topic before both America and Britain entered the war. Obviously, it became a bigger topic after Britain was brought in up to just before Japan attacked the United States. Memories of WWI held along with the almost scriptural authority given to Washington's warning to keep out of foreign conflict.

To my recollection, part of the inspiration for his children's book characters was WII. Horton of Horton Hears a Who refered to the underestimation of Japan. Yertle the Turtle:

"I'm Yertle the Turtle! Oh, marvelous me!
For I am the ruler of all that I see!"

was obviously based on Hitler.

Oh believe me, I did not take it as an insult. For those of us--most of us--who grew up on Dr. Seuss, it is probably a surprise to find out how politically active he was. I first learned of it in a 60 Minutes interview back when I was just a wee spud. Fascinating. I had the opportunity to see a small show of his political work.

"Knowing the ending," it may be difficult to appreciate the arguments for and against war back then. WWI was seen, justifiably, as an utter waste of lives from an American perspective. To get involved again? Of course, both Japan and Germany "solved" the debate by attacking America and declaring war respectively. Looking now, stopping the attrocities of the Nazi and Japanese regimes seem obvious.

One lesser thought about transgression of Hitler is that he ruined a perfectly good mustache type for the rest of us.
