Before I started taking karate, I originally thought that it was ineffective because of what the people around said about it. When I tried it out myself, I found out that it was extremely effective, as long as you know how to execute correctly.

The upward palm heel strike to the nose killing you thing.

I've heard this from my uncle who was in Army intelligence for 30 years, from Karate instructors, and even from an anatomy teacher. In theory it makes perfect sense, that an upward strike would force the knife-like blade of your crista galli (which is bone, not cartilage) straight into your brain. But if it were possible, it would have happened at least once in human history. Sadly, empirical evidence seems to always be disregarded when talking about martial arts outside of Bullshido.

The old belief that size doesn't matter when fighting.

    BS!

I'm a small guy, once I was sparring my combatives instructor who was 6'5 and 260lbs of pure muscle. He got tired of me wiggling out of some of his holds, so he just sat on my chest until I tapped out from lack of air.

Size does matter in a fight. Its why pro fighters have weight classes. Its why after over a decade doing fighting arts, I'm happy gtfo instead of fight for my life with a 6 foot tall ape of a man.

Shaolin monks and Bruce Lee would kill everybody. I also believed Jet Li was up there too. Then came everyone else like JCVD and Chuck Norris, and finally, actual fighting legends like Muhammad Ali.

Also that Chinese martial arts were the best, then Japanese, then everything else.

Funny how backwards all of that was.
