UFC confirms mixed martial arts card in Manchester, England

(CP) - The UFC has confirmed it is headed back to Britain to hold an April 21 mixed martial arts card in Manchester, England.

The show at Manchester's MEN Arena, believed to be UFC 70 although the UFC has yet to name the night, follows pay-per-view events March 3 in Columbus, Ohio, and April 7 in Houston.

It marks the first foray into Britain since UFC 33: Brawl at the Hall when Canadian Carlos Newton was beaten by Matt Hughes in July 2002 at London's Royal Albert Hall.

"We had a lot of obstacles over the last six years, but I never gave up on bringing the UFC back to the UK," UFC president Dana White said in a release. "Now we have our UK office up and running, we're going to have fights in the UK and throughout Europe, so the UFC is here to stay."

Internet reports have pegged Mirko (Cro Cop) Filipovic as being on the English show, along with a rematch of Tito Ortiz-Forrest Griffin.

Edmonton light-heavyweight Victor (The Matrix) Valimaki is also expected to fight on the card, possibly against former Italian boxer Alessio Sakara.

European fighters Michael Bisping, Dennis Siver and Cheick Kongo are also reportedly on board.

In other UFC fight news, Kalib Starnes' camp confirms the middleweight from Surrey, B.C., is in negotiations to meet Chris (The Crippler) Leben at an event in May. Leben is coming off a UFC 66 submission loss to Jason MacDonald of Red Deer, Alta.

IFL: The Toronto Dragons kick off their International Fight League season on Feb. 23 in Atlanta when they meet the Portland-based Wolfpack, coached by Matt Lindland.

The Dragons, coached by Carlos Newton will be represented by lightweight Wagnney Fabiano of Brazil, middleweight Brent Beauparlant of Montreal, light-heavyweight Wojtek Kaszowski of Winnipeg and heavyweight Rafael Feijao of Brazil. The team has yet to name its welterweight.

In the other matchup at The Arena at Gwinnett Center, the New York-based Pitbulls coached by Renzo Gracie will take on the Chicago-based Red Bears led by Igor Zinoviev.

UFC veteran Robbie Lawler faces off against Brazil's Eduardo Pamplona in a "superfight" following the team competition.

The evening is the third stop on the 11-event IFL 2007 schedule culminating in the final at The Forum in Los Angeles on Sept. 15.

Hughes Talks GSP: Former welterweight champion Matt Hughes offers a damning take on his preparation for his title loss to Montreal's George St. Pierre in November.

"I went into that fight mostly on faith and I believed that it was my destiny to win that fight," Hughes says on his official website. "I now realize that it takes more than faith to do anything in this world. Faith is still No. 1, but it also takes No. 2 knowledge and No. 3 physical practice."

Hughes also says he should have watch more tape of St. Pierre "and come up with a better game plan instead of going out there and finding a way to win one way or the other."

He also reckons he could have been in better shape.

Hughes returns to action at UFC 68: The Uprising on March 3 in Columbus, Ohio, when he takes on Chris Lytle.

i live literally 5 mins walk from the arena, i can see it out my kitchen window. i am fuckin buzzing about this.

    hope it doesnt attract as many idiots as the last mma thing at the arena, where misleading advertising suggested tyson would be fighting (he reffed a match);

the crowd were not one bit happy, which is fair enough, but they were also booing the groundwork like hicks, which was annoying.

Ok thanks for that. What exactly is the UFC fight club? Some kind of fan club thing?

I am excited to see the Tito v Forrest rematch, if they have it, If Forrest comes off the blocks hard I think he can win. The second half of their last fight was great.

I think the first half Forrest was a bit overwhelmed by all the Tito hype.

    Forest FTW.
