Vegan/Vegitarian athletes and martial artists

Yeah, I had a friend who was a vegetarian, not because of his love for animals...but his INTENSE HATRED OF PLANTS! Weird guy.

That's a good way to decide what to eat if really. If you're happy killing it, then eat it.
I know I should kill myself some pigs, cows and sheep to check how I really feel about it, but opportunities to do that don't crop up too often for us city-folk.

ive hunted turkey, rabbit, possum, and pig. cant really see myself hunting cows because, well, theres not much point. never really had a problem killing stuff to eat it or because it damages the environment, although i abhor the idea of hunting for "trophies"

Human civilization happened once man domesticated animals to drink their milk and eat their meat.

And a great many people killed and butchered their own meat. This isn't the case now. This is fine in principle (specialisation's needed for cicivlisation to progress), but there are some unintended and unnecessary consequences (just for the animals, not to mention the environmental consequences).

Now, this isn't a matter of modern technology vs. premodern slaughter. It's a question of how much unnecessary suffering is involved. Killing animals isn't pleasant, but you can do it quickly, with an eye to how much pain and suffering is involved. At present, the goal isn't the minimisation of pain (or waste or ecological degradation) but the maximisation of profit. There's nothing wrong with people trying to feed their families, but there are better ways to raise and kill meat.

I had an Aikido teacher once who didn't eat meat for 20 years. He was a really nice old man. But he was nothing but skin and bones. Is it possible to gain muscle without eating the muscles of another living thing?

But that living thing can be a plant.

Out of curiosity what religion do you follow? I'm Buddhist myself but not serious enough to actually go through with vegetarianism. I tried it and it really didnt work for me but if it works for you great. The way I look at the moral thing is that the animal is already dead you didnt kill it (unless your a deer hunter) and eating it only ensures the animal doesnt go to waste.
