Old and new avatars

Greetings,
I was chewing on this thought about avatars for a long time now...
We all know it's fun to find, chose and post a new in-fucking-credible avatar from time to time.
But...

...what if the almighty Admin would make it so, that the new avatar would only appear beginning with the post in which it was first utilized and the ones before that would stay the way they were?

I don't know if it's possible to arrange, I'm a computer caveman, but after all it's all just 0's and 1's, right?

The avatar usually is connected to a person's current state of mind, mood, style affiliation, etc., often users are reacting to/discussing certain avatars. When the user changes it, you go back and have no idea what the discussion was about before, since there is a completely different picture now...
If this idea would get adapted, we could read the old stuff and see the "blue period" as opposed to the "red period" and such...

Not that this would be such a great issue, but...

Man, I don't even know how to put an avatar up. Is there a tutorial somewhere?

go to your user control panel and change the avatar settings. duh.

in a perfect world people would just use a pic of themselves. exceptions would be made for horribly overweight chicks obviously, but girls dont use the internet anyway so its a moot point

After a friend of mine sent me a post card from Belgium with a bloody bunny on it, I knew I had to have him as my avatar.

It would take a ridiculously awesome image to make me even think about changing it.

Yeah, so far I've been consistent too (although rumour has it there's a special NDS avatar in the making pour moi).
But there are people who change avatars like others change underwear...
("I get a new pair of underwear every day. This way I have seven on myself by Sunday.")
