one of the best ways i found to get free equipment is go to your local high school and talk with the principle about taking the old equipment that they want to get rid of off their hands. I got a canvus heavybag, a 2 1/2 inch pair of tumbling mats, and various other stuff that they were going to throw away to make room for new equipment. If that doesn't work then post an ad in you local paper.

Ebay is your friend. I set up a decent home gym using a combo of Ebay and local classifieds and got a pretty good set up for <$1000. Includes a 300lbs Oly weight set, bench, squat rack, rower, and pullup/dip station.
