    Horses for courses mate... In juwaza anything goes. If by Sparring you're attempting to draw a comparrision with BJJ/MMA/Boxing then no we (I) don't do that because if I did, I wouldn't be doing aikido however, as a yudansha of some experience I expect my senior students to punch/kick/attack with commitment to actually hit me and vias-versa.

    If I remember correctly. In Jiyuwaza people sit on their knees and bow to each other then one or a couple more people attack this one person and they let themselves get thrown over and over again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOKN_GlXvAs

    ^^^ That's not sparring.

    One day I will challenge Ikeda's and Yamada's schools and that Chiba dude too. And issue the challenge on Aikiweb for hilarity.

    Jiyu = free

    Waza = technique

    Therefore jiyu waza is aikido technique done free style. Doing it whilst on one's knees' as in suwari position is one aspect of it, but not the entirity of it. Your imagination and ability to take ukemi is the limiting factor in how far you can go in a jiyu-waza session.

    More red varrots for Mr Jones.

    That depends upon who you talk too.

    Chiba Kazuo (San Diego Aikikai) was my first Japanese instructor/influence from Hombu dojo and his attitude is very martial yet, Endo Sensei's aikido (again Hombu dojo) is pretty much nothing more than moving relaxation however; Endo doesn't appear to make any secret of that. Ultimately there's always going to be a divide in what we as westerners (and some Japanese) think the definition of "fighting art" is.. Iaido and Kendo are fighting arts but not in the eyes of those who focus on much more modern systems such as MMA/BJJ. Of course there's a big difference between "tradition" and "Fighting" and I'm the first to acknowledge that.

    I heard rumors that Chiba's tough Aikido is just him being a dick with his uke. Don't know if it's true or not.
