Am I missing something...are we supposed to write a thesis on why Aikido is ineffective to help you out on a project for Yahoo answers...?

Or do you want us to go to Yahoo answers and respond ourselves...if so, what link?

Too confusing for the end fo the year, man...

Some of the responses to "Is Aikido effective"

"yes it can. by practicing aikido, you build up the reflexes and unconciously remember the movements, so when someone tries to steal your purse or something, you can get them under the arm and grab the purse out of their hand without even thinking about it.

edit: you don't need to train hard and break brick walls in order to have skills and be able to use them. aikido isn't about "attacking" it's about self defense and how to react in stressful situations. and it's not violent."

"Aikido is highly effective, fully defensive martial art. The first principal alone is "Get out of the Way" (basically - and a principal I failed to re-learn having been so ingrained to 'block' so I had to quit) and since it follows up with redirecting someone's force of attack your opponent is really just setting themselves up to get hurt - you'll just help them along.

While I've never had the opportunity to use the limited Aikido I know (and at an early level I knew how to break peoples arms if I wished) I do have a friend who's a brown belt in Aikido (he doesn't want to make black belt because in our region you have to register yourself with law enforcement should you "accidentally" kill anyone)... I can't beat him in a pound for pound fight. I have a background in Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Judo, Karate and Kung Fu. I'm taller and generally stronger than he is, physically but the only way to beat him in a fight is to not throw a punch or kick that the Aikido can use against me - no matter how much smack he talks I just have to smile and say "whatever, I'm still not going to attack you... I win!" even a fake jab has landed me in a wrist lock."

"One good thing about aikido is that it teaches you to use your 'attackers' energy/ki against them, thus enabling even 'small/short' people to defend themselves/deflect an attack.
I would recommend aikido to anyone.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (often referred to by his title 'O Sensei' or 'Great Teacher'). On a purely physical level it is an art involving some throws and joint locks that are derived from Jujitsu and some throws and other techniques derived from Kenjutsu. Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement"
" The reason elite level MMAists don't fight with aikido is the same reason elite level swimmers don't swim with their lips." - Virus

" I shocked him with my skills on the ice becuase Wing Chun is great for hockey fighting." - 'Sifu' Milt Wallace

"Besides, as you might already know (from Virus, for example) - there's only 1 wing chun and it sucks big time" - Tonuzaba

"Even when I'm promising mayhem and butt-chicanery, I'm generally posting with a smile on my face." - Sochin101

"That said, if he blocked my hip on a drop nage, I would extend my leg into a drop tai Otoshi and slam him so hard his parents would die." - MTripp
