    Dealing with straight blasts

Hey guys, just wondering how you guys deal with people who straight blast, or just use jabs/crosses. I normally step diagonally past them and just return with hooks/jabs. The reason I ask is, I've teaching a friend to box, just for fun, and I seem to have forgotten alot of my boxing training!
This is made much harder by the fact that my friend refuses to spar head shots yet!

Work the angles. People who do this generally have sucky footwork, so you can circle and come in at an angle pretty well. I tend to have a better jab than most people, so I just slip the first punch and count jab and move out.

Mmm thats what I've been doing, Unfortunately, in trying to teach him, whenever he spars, when I don't put any pressure on him, he hits me properly, but when I do put pressure on him, he resorts to slappy punches. Which kinda defeats the idea for me to slip in and beat him. (Wouldn't be too good to learn to box :P). Maybe its just me, but when I have no head shots, I feel like I'm doing nothing :-s. He could hit me all day in the chest and I wouldn't care :-s. Do you have any drills I should go through with him? I remember I learnt footwork by drills + gentle sparring, unfortunately my drills don't seem to be getting rid of his fear of getting hit/flailing.

Sorry, unfortunately I am a terrible resource for drills, since most of what I've learned has come primarily from sparring and competing. The only thing I can recommend is more sparring haha.

Send him to a real boxing gym, it'll be much better for him to learn under an actual trainer. Teaching him just 'for fun' is going to have him develop bad habits, at best, which if he ever wants to go with formal training will be hard to unlearn and at worst he's going actually believe he's a trained boxer at some point.

Besides which, boxing with no head shots isn't boxing and if he can't take being smacked in the head then why is he trying to learn to box at all. Theres only way to get over the fear of being hit and that is to be hit repeatedly to learn how to take the blows.
