I think he's talking about a lunging round kick, where you sort of leap in the direction you're kicking to add distance and momentum to the kick.

Theres a big difference between a step and a hop.

When you hop you are putting your whole body into a determined motion, there's no friction, no energy being lost in your other leg. You can't control your penetration as well either.

It's a hulk smash thing.
