    I know this is a controversial point, but the heart doesn't move the body around. Performance is measured in skeletal muscle function.

    Does the heart exist to service the skeletal muscles, or vice versa?

    Does the tail wag the dog?
    The heart exists to provide oxygenated blood to your muscle tissue which becomes increasingly difficult as demand for said blood increases. Your heart gets a workout because it has to pump more to meet the demand. Once it stops meeting demand you start what is called anaerobic respiration which produces lactic acid, producing the "burn" that's all the rage in europe these days.

    Cardio = cardiovacular.

    Exerciseing the heart. It's key to conditioning. It doesn't matter how strong you are. If your cardio isn't up to snuff you'll peter out befor reaching your full potential. Cardio also conditions you body to utilize and carry oxygen more efficiently.

    The elliptical won't do as much for your knee. I've got doctor's backup on this.

    It's zero impact, so it's still better than running.

    I disagree. The impact of running might be greater, but it can provide a much higher level of intensity than an elliptical can.

    I'm pretty sure there are various other benefits to running hence why runners, boxers, soccer players, football players, etc. run rather than use ellipticals.

    While I've read dumber things, this is up there with doing squats on a swiss ball.

    Also, erase your notions of cardio.. and your response too.

    Do a search, the worthlessness of "cardio" has already been espoused a million times over.

    Thanks for all the answer guys.

    SO I take it that my heart gets stronger which allows it to pump more blood, thereby giving my body more oxygen, which in turn decreases the heavy breathing/out of breath sensation I get because my cardio sucks?

    Right?

    Im havent ever heard that "impact" excercises help your bones. I have heard that excercise helps your bones. The muscles pull against the bones, thereby strengthening them. Weight (overall not just muscle mass) helps strenghten your bones.

    How is cardio worthless? I am not sure what you are saying here.

    Of course that wasnt the point of the thread. The point was, what muscles get worked out when doing cardio (that specifically HELP/INCREASE your cardio.)
