I have an at least equally dumb submission escape: A friend of mine suggested, in order to escape an RNC that is fully in place, elbowing the groin.

(Not his own groin, the attackers.)

I stared at him for a few seconds and mimed doing a (standing) RNC on an invisible person and asked him to explain how he would do that. He said "Oh, like that. I dunno.".

An armbar is equally dangerous both on the street and on the mat. Attempting to rip your opponents windpipe out while being armbarred will only result in you losing a limb.

now i've got the mental image of some halfwit getting rnc'd and then vigorously elbowing himself in the groin. given how really fucking weird that would look, the attacker might let go.

I'm telling you, man, the throat rip might not be a good counter to the armbar, but a drunken armbar isn't a good counter for the pre-emptive throat throttle either.

The last MMA event I attended featured a boxer knocking out a guy with his free hand while getting a very nasty armbar. I was about 3 feet from the fighters and I was amazed at the power this guy was putting behind his punches while defending the armbar.

Not a throat rip, but still worth saying.
