There are a couple of good articles about the try outs at the following links:

Thanks for the ecouragement guys; I will post the embarassing video once I get it compressed and get a youtube setup :) Excellent articles dtrain, i thin they really summarize the event well.

TEA, there are so many people there that it is hard to kep track of who is getting picked and who isn't. i was part of the last group to go.. we had been moved outside and had fighters suround th emats to make sure no one ended up on the concrete [which almost happened several times]. There were definitely some impressive grapplers that didn't make the next cut; it seems they wanted previous fight history, and personality, so yes I would say that unless you were downright amazing on the mat, you had to have a high combination of both personalit and fight experience. Even mcCarthy said that it' 80% personality and 20% fighting, so that should tell you something.

The guy mentioned in the 2nd article, Diego, looked decent in striking and was apparently a jujitsu black belt, so they did take some quality as well; I will be surprised if he doesn't make the show.

Hey KurSe, I just realized you live in Boca. I use to live in your neck of the woods. I lived in Vero Beach for a few years before moving to Birmingham. It's a bit north of you.

Could anyone try out, or did you have to already have some pro experience under your belt?

So, has it been verified that all the fighters will be lightweights?

Dtrain, cool man, did you train anywhere down here? Ever coming back down this way? How does Birmingham compare? Jujitsu and MMA is pretty available down this way.

Anyone could try out, but it seemed they mostly were looking for people who had fight experience (I had been doing jujitsu for a week and i tried out .. :) ). And Dana said that it was for lightweights only; there were some guys there who were easily pushing 180+, but I think people just come out, hope for the best, have unrealistic expectations, etc. It didn't seem like anyone over 170 made it on to the next round.

It is a reality show BTW. I watch for the action. To see how they train and study their style. My wife watches for all the bullshit that goes on in the house. I'd wager the poeple tuning in for the BS out wiegh those truely intersted in the sport. Even if they get the contract they still have to step up and fight with UFC calliber fighters in the end.

KurSe, I wasn't training MMA when I was down there. I was into karate and there was pretty good school called Vero Beach Karate Association. You definately had to get hooked up with the right instructor though. A kick boxing gym opened right before I left, but I don't have any experience with it. I've found a quality MMA gym here in Birmingham. It's associated with Straight Blast Gym. I'm new to MMA. I've only been at it for a few months, but I like the guys I train with and the instructor.
Anyway, back to topic...I don't care why people are tuning in, as long as they are. It's great exposure for MMA and when people know the atheletes, it makes watching for interesting.
