Boxing legend Joe Frazier back in the ring for charity fight

Boxing legend Joe Frazier back in the ring for charity fight

    November 30, 2006

MEMPHIS, United States (AFP) - Former world heavyweight boxing champion Smokin' Joe Frazier will step back into the ring for a three-round charity exhibition match at a Memphis hotel.

Facing off against Frazier tonight will be the mayor of Memphis, fellow senior citizen Willie Herenton, an amateur boxer who hung up his gloves 40 year ago.

The fight will be the former champ's first boxing match since the 1980s.

Frazier is perhaps best-known for 1971's "Fight of the Century", the 15-round match in which he handed Muhammad Ali his first defeat. Frazier retained his heavyweight title until he was defeated by George Foreman in 1973.

Now 62, Frazier has continued to train throughout his retirement and maintains the same weight as when he fought Foreman.

The fit, six-foot-six (two-meter), nearly 200-pound Herenton has been training diligently for several weeks. The 66-year-old mayor, a former amateur boxer, won his first of several amateur matches at age 14, but retired from boxing 40 years ago.

Though confident is his fighting abilities, the self-described "macho" mayor has signed a waiver to release Frazier from responsibility in the event of bodily injuries to Herenton.

The rumble is expected to raise 100,000 dollars for a local drug treatment program.

Bodily injuries....is anyone else thinking this will be pretty gross unless they cover up?

Frazier would be a douchebag if he put a beating on a 66-year old mayor who hasn't boxed in 40 years in a charity, exhibition fight. It'll probably just end up looking like a sparring match.

Frazier has hated Ali's guts for decades, with reasonably good basis (e.g. Ali calling him a gorilla and Uncle Tom). Neither one of them are models of humanity.

Read this re: Frazier and Ali: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/osm/s...559805,00.html

Ali played the race card against Frazier in a mean-spirited way. For the entertainment of white America, he labelled Joe as ugly and dumb. And at the same time, speaking to black America, he branded Frazier an Uncle Tom, turning him into an object of derision and scorn. The latter insult was particularly galling. Joe Frazier is not, and never was, an Uncle Tom. Yet to this day, there are people who think of him as a less-than-proud black man because of Ali's diatribes.

'One of the many paradoxes about Ali,' says historian Randy Roberts, 'is that he embraced an ideology that disparaged white people; yet he was never cruel to white people, only blacks. Except for occasional humorous barbs, Ali's white opponents were treated with dignity and respect. But things got ugly with Floyd Patterson, Ernie Terrell, and Frazier. Patterson and Terrell might have asked for it because of things they said. But Joe was innocent. And to deny the cruelty of what Ali did to Joe Frazier is to continue to be cruel to Joe.'

'I'm sure Ali has forgotten most of what he did,' Dave Wolf observed years after he watched from Frazier's corner in Manila. 'But the damage he did to Joe was never undone. There were moments when Joe was so hurt and which he remembers so vividly. And Ali probably doesn't remember them at all.'

'You don't do to a man what Ali did to Joe,' says Bert Watson, Frazier's business manager in the Eighties and Nineties. 'Ali robbed him of who he is. To a lot of people, Joe is still ignorant, slow-speaking, dumb, and ugly. That tag never leaves him. People have only seen one Joe: the one created by Ali. If you're a man, that's going to get to you in a big way.'

Frazier is no saint, that's for sure..but Ali could be a real prick too. I can see why Frazier hated him so much.
