Axe kicks - What's your take?

Effective kick that serves a purpose, or complete waste of time?

Can you cause lots of damage with it fighting someone who's the same height or taller than you?

Not many fighters use it, the one that I remember using it was Andy Hug.

Have you ever seen anyone using an axe kick to effect a KO?

if you can do it sure... i can count the number of people i have seen who could use them effectively on one hand though. and they tend to be people who can make pretty much any kick work.
