    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Building big abs

After doing thousands of crunches, my abs have only a slight buldge to them and don't seem to grow in size, just endurance.

How do you build abs that really protrude out? Do you need to use weights for that?

By "protrude" do you mean like a pro bodybuilder's?

That's called "distension," as in, "WOW! look at the distended abdomen on that guy!"

Typically associated with moronically low bodyfat levels and steroid abuse.

Your genetics will determine exactly how much "bulge" and "cut" your abs will get. Keep working, add some incline and/or weight to your crunches, and watch what you eat.

    Them's the breaks.
And lo, Kano looked down upon the field and saw the multitudes. Amongst them were the disciples of Uesheba who were greatly vexed at his sayings. And Kano spake: "Do not be concerned with the mote in thy neighbor's eye, when verily thou hast a massive stick in thine ass".

That's because high reps typically work endurance as opposed to hypertrophy (what you seem to want, although I can't see why) or strength. You need to do fewer reps to get strength and size gains. However, a good programme with all your usual compound lifts will get you all the ab strength and size you will need.

They're essentially the same as any other muscle. Therefore hypertrophy will be the result of weight training and proper nutrition - NOT eight thousand crunches.

Thanks guys. What's usual compound lift?

I want more distension (thanks scrapper) because I though the increased bulk will help me take hits better, and it just looks nice. :D

You think wrong. Learn to breathe when taking a gut shot and you'll save yourself more trouble.

Distended is gross and a reslut of GH isn't it? Now just more muscle mass on the abs can't be that bad. Try weighted situps or something. I would imagine like any other muscle you need to use resistance to make it grow, not just a bunch of reps.

Somehow this just reminded me of one of Nord's threads :tongue6:
