The man who would be “Bullseye” aka Bob Taylor

First, I would preface this article by stating that throwing things at an attacker is not a terrible idea, be it a bottle of beer, chair, rock, or anything heavy and/or sharp. In a self-defense scenario, there is nothing wrong with throwing objects. However, like a lot of Bullshido someone takes these simple concepts too far…enter Bob Taylor.

Bob Taylor has created many self-defense videos including Unarmed and Fearless Weapon Disarmament, Advanced Gun Disarmament and Weapon Retention, Small Man’s Advantage, and the focus of this article Dead-Eye Power Throwing.

Here are some claims designed to sell Mr. Taylor’s Power Throwing video.

His advertising states that he has “Scare[ed] the living crap out of entire biker gangs, skinhead Attack Squads and every black belt jerk who ever dared to make fun of his size.” You can learn Mr. Taylor’s "unbeatable skills in just one afternoon. You will learn to use a knife and anything else you can get your hands on… including keys, pencils, broken glass and literally hundreds of other items that will always be around when you to TAKE SOMEONE OUT from across the room…” He claims that he can teach you how to take out any attacker with a simple paper clip by throwing it with such power that it will become embedded into an attackers skull from up to 16 feet away.

Now I am not a physicist but a paper clip has little weight therefore the speed required to “embed” a paperclip into someone’s skull from 16 feet away is beyond the ability of any human. In addition, Mr. Taylor’s claim that you can learn his techniques in an afternoon is dubious. It takes time and practice to learn how to throw knives that are designed to be thrown, to say nothing of improvised projectiles made from pens, paperclips, or wire hangers.

Mr. Taylor states that only five individuals know the secrets of Power Throwing. It is a “lost art because there's just FIVE masters who understand this - and four of them are either dead… in prison… or just won't talk.”

I think you get the idea, however I do not wish to spoil the fun that is Bob Taylor so here is a list of websites that sell his videos.

P.S. If you have the time required to modify a wire hanger into a throwing implement you have enough time to simply retreat from danger. In addition, he is so close to the target that it might make more since to simply use the modified hanger to repeatedly stab the attacker.

I've actually watched the DVD. It was discontinued a long time ago, but you still find it for sale on Ebay.

The TRS marketing campaign (which discontinued the item) and outrageous marketing by some other sellers on the net have turned it into a joke-I like the ones with the picture of the paperclip and the claims you can imbed it in someone's forehead from 16 feet away.

The DVD is about powerthrowing, everything from Bowie knives, to butter knives, modified forks and hangers, screwdrivers, etc...he does throw and imbed a paperclip in a target, but it's from only about a distance of five feet, and one of those one in a million shots.

The techniques work: after watching the video, I went downstairs and threw a heavy writing pen into a cardboard box. He goes over about 3 different throwing techniques.


He talks about throwing smaller items to distract someone to get away, and of course with the larger items (bowie knifes) you could very well kill someone. When I was in Somalia in 93, there was a guy who could throw and imbed the military issue bayonet in a wooden target about 15 feet away.

Something fun to do, but I don't think I'd ever rely on this for self defense, and if the other guy has a gun, all bets are off.
