I don't know what exactly is a "mud forge", but I'll tell you what I do when confronting this problem: usually there is something wrong with the ventilation, so I try to regulate the flow.
When this fails to solve the problem I scrap the used coke on the bottom and start a new fire. If you still can't obtain sufficient heat you might want to make a new forge.
I made one from an old portable BBQ, thirty cms of iron pipe and an old hair dryer; I used a drill, a circular saw (one of those with carbide blades) and a electric solderer. -
