    Certification and lineage merely demonstrates one has actually studied an art he wishes to teach from someone, hopefully, competent. They do not make the holder competent in and of themselves. However, if the issuers of the certification have high standards, it is easier to accept the holder as competent.

    well then, does anyone know of any reputable gyms/schools in montreal? I consider myself to be open minded, after all, so if I decide to check out another school, I wouldn't mind someone pointing me in the right direction. Like I said earlier, I'm here because I wanted something like JKD. if anyone has any good suggestions, I'm open to them.

    Why are certifications necessary? Because of what he sJP himself has written (or had written for him):

    Look at where he claims to have mastered many forms of Chinese, Japanese and Indian martial arts. If you claim it you must back it up. It's like calling myself a paramedic instructor just because I have Red Cross basic first aid and I watch ER.

    There is another post where a FSDer says sJP studied karate but did not need too because he was soooo good at barn fights.

    Outrageous claims with no substantiation (and an unwillingness to prove) puts the entire FSD into question right there IMHO.

    Nope (cough *gamma * cough) I for one (cough * Tri-Star * cough) don't know of any good schools in Montreal....
