Certification and lineage merely demonstrates one has actually studied an art he wishes to teach from someone, hopefully, competent. They do not make the holder competent in and of themselves. However, if the issuers of the certification have high standards, it is easier to accept the holder as competent.

well then, does anyone know of any reputable gyms/schools in montreal? I consider myself to be open minded, after all, so if I decide to check out another school, I wouldn't mind someone pointing me in the right direction. Like I said earlier, I'm here because I wanted something like JKD. if anyone has any good suggestions, I'm open to them.

Continue training with non-compliant opponents and you should have no problem. Provided of course, you only fight non-compliant opponents.

Also goeth thou to NewbieTown, introduce yourself, and some people might be able to give you some good advice. It is "Newbie Friendly"--so you will not generate two pages of "FSD lol u sux HA!HA!" responses.

Though Omega may tell you to accept the amorous advances of a skunk, but he is special. . . .

Why are certifications necessary? Because of what he sJP himself has written (or had written for him):

    http://www.bullshido.net/forums/show...&postcount=230

Look at where he claims to have mastered many forms of Chinese, Japanese and Indian martial arts. If you claim it you must back it up. It's like calling myself a paramedic instructor just because I have Red Cross basic first aid and I watch ER.

There is another post where a FSDer says sJP studied karate but did not need too because he was soooo good at barn fights.

Outrageous claims with no substantiation (and an unwillingness to prove) puts the entire FSD into question right there IMHO.
