    nyc underground mma show 11/5

    there's an nyc underground mma show on 11/5, featuring some nhb fights and a 155-pound shootfighting tournament. as these underground shows tend to be very informal (people just show up and fight), i figured i'd post this here on the throwdown board.

    as you can imagine, the level of competition varies greatly - although it was pretty damn interesting when a 5-animal kung fu instructor from the bronx took on a judo green belt at one of the shows last year.

    anyway, anyone interesting in attending (or fighting), shoot me an email and i'll forward it on to the promoter. the last event was at the fighthouse, but this one is being held somewhere else.

    Whats the minimum experience you've seen there so far? And how are the matches set up/ when are future events being held?

    the minimum experience would be whatever thugs have come in off the street to fight - the highest level would be the national-level wrestlers or the bjj black belt that have competed. the matches are set up by the promoter; he asks two dudes if they want to fight and they either say yes or no. no idea about future events - i usually only find out about these a few weeks (or a few days) in advance.

    This is really interesting. Just read that article. It's technically legal because fighters aren't paid, and there's no advertising? If it's not a sanctioned event doesn't it count as a street fight or disturbance that the police have to put a stop to?

    This seems realy cool, a local show to watch and eventually compete in. Its on a thursday I see, but how do we find out where it is?

    Also, are you part of the UCL or just helping out your fellow martial artists?

    KempoFist, its not a sanctioned even as far as I know, which makes it legal. It sucks but you can always watch to see how safe it is. Its clsoe by in the city, just hop on the train.

    11/5 = November 5th
    November 5th != Thursday
    November 5th = Sunday
    Sunday = 11/5

    on a side note...
    10/5 = October 5th
    October 5th = Thursday
    Thursday = 10/5

    If they can have underground cage fights, why the hell is it so hard to avoid litigation when it comes to damages recieved in regular martial arts lessons?

    from the article it seems like there is a ref (of some sort) present, and that there have been no serious injuries.

    what sort of medical staff is on hand for this? it seems like a good chance to either get some experience or get a trip to the ER due to sandbagging, since it sounds like the fights are mostly not set up in advance.

    i would definitely be interested in spectating before i would consider fighting in one of these or sending someone in to fight.
