Defense against bumrush w/ hooks

I'm a counter puncher and my weakness is getting overwhelmed easily. If I wasn't rocked(tm) I should have uppercutted my friend as he was well open for it, but instead I just shelled up and then kicked him in the balls, smashed them right between my shin and his thigh. So other than that, what good recommendations do some of you have for countering a bum-rusher?

I counter a bum rush with either a hard jab/overhead or a front kick. Jumping back at angles also throws them off.

Yes.

Jump back, and spring foreward once your back foot touches.

Tuck that chin in, and keep your hands up. That alone will nullify most flailing punches. Now, clinch and knees or straight punches?

if someone is close enough to be throwing hooks they are probably already too close for you to effectively use straight punches. also, they are in a perfect place for you to go in with a clinch, because their arms will be on the outside of yours.

Backing up is retarded I am banning the next person that recommends backing up in this forum. You only need about 1 round of fight experience to know backing up is a bad idea.

Circle, cut the angle, attack etc. Backing up is not an option unless you enjoy having your ass kicked.
