ONLY use headbutts if during your life you have found that you have a 'hard head'
Many people are stunned or see stars badly from a decent head impact, so be very careful.

If you definitely have a 'hard head' then for self-defence you should train headbutt-movements but only rarely with impact.

I have a hard head, see.

there is an element of danger to yourself though.. i think?

you hear stories of dumb shits splitting their heads open trying to headbutt a guy and stuff - can anyone varify this kind of thing?

sounds to me kinda like stories of people breaking their knuckles or wrists punching someone - i.e. it is probably happening as a result of it being done incorrectly in some way. I'm no headbutt expert but it seems to me that if you landed a *proper* headbutt (say, your forehead to their nose?) you'd suffer only the most trivial injuries and they would be KTFO'd. I wouldn't rule it out on anecdotal evidence because it seems intuitive (to me) that it could be an excellent infighting move to have. Especially rising headbutts, which are harder to screw up.

Rising headbutts are best described by someone who knows what they're talking about, but the basic idea is , for example, if you can get your head below your opponent's chin (this works best if you are the shorter fighter and you get in close), abruptly stand up while whipping your head upward - so your hairline meets their chin with your legs and neck behind it. The only trick with this is getting into the setup position - it really helps to be shorter. but it's very hard to hit the fragile parts of your head with this one compared to a "forward" headbutt.

Yeah, as Epicurus said... The hardest part of your skull (at least the part that your want to use for most headbutts) is the top of your forehead, near the hairline.

    Basic headbutt-

    1. Set up by closing in
    2. If necessary, get a handle on their clothing or face with one or both hands
    3. Accelerate your brow into the bridge of their nose
    4. Enjoy the crisp, efficient feeling of their nose breaking
