A good article on headbutt application

While wandering through wikipedia I found a very well-written and, as far as I can assess, knowledgable article on headbutts and related strikes:

    http://stickgrappler.tripod.com/rma/gmhead.html

I found it a fine read and couldn't find much to disagree with. If you have the time and inclination it's a good way to brush up on headbutts because, if your MA school is like my old one, you don't work on headbutts much.

As an aside, at the end he lists training methods including light sparring with protective headgear - is this feasible/safe? Can anyone suggest a way of training headbutts that has worked for them? Unfortunately headbutts are one of those 'hard-to'train' moves which, like the dreaded eye-gouge, end up being abused in RBSD, and thus it can be difficult to feel comfortable working them into attacks for humble "sportfighters" such as myself.

In one of the recent Dog Brothers videos it shows them training with headbutts against a knife. I think with proper headgear you could train the headbutts. Maybe use the pads, especially when doing ground 'n pound.

Finnfight is an example of an MMA organization that allows headbutts, so I wouldn't be suprised if someone has some kind of training method to the strike.

In the "Passchen document" of 1659 (which has been posted before; thrown jar FTW!) the attacker is shown wielding a poker and the defender is seen pulling them down via their weapon arm and headbutting them.

I dont know man, as a boxer my basic goal is generally to hurt my opponent whilst protecting my head.. and using it as a weapon may not be the most practical way to go about acheiving that goal.

Of course headbutts have their applications, as long as youre using it where you can, not aiming to use it where it may not be applicable 'cause its cool and hurts the other guy like hell.

And here I thought butting was a standard part of the boxing clinch... Top of your head to eyebrow FTW.

Yes, I was very impressed with the article, especially when I noted the publication dates. This guy was doing it before it was cool, as it were.
