not as hard to get as belts in boxing... :boxing:

Sorry, but there's no real answer to your question. Depends on you and your instructor. Hopefully someone will chime in with their training, but your may be faster or slower.

I missed the chance to test once so far, but I've been a yellow belt (7th kyu) for about a year now. Still depends on your instructors, a guy I was BSing with last Gashuku was a former Marine and a 6th kyu, so I'll see where he's at come October 28th.

Kyokushin belts have been a joke since they stopped punching each other in the face and killing wild animals with their bare hands at gradings. You would gain mucho kudos on Bullshido if you videoed yourself walking into a Kyokushin Dojo and pointing this out to them.

You'd be aiming to look like this when you take Cullion's advice.

From all accounts I've heard, Kyokushin ranks similarly to Judo.

It takes a LONG ASS TIME to make rank if you don't compete...or if you simply suck at competing. I've been told you can expect between a 6-8 year wait until shodan.

However, those that successfully compete will often be raced through the ranks depending on their skill level. I've heard of amazing competitors that made shodan in 2-3 years...but they probably trained full-time every day in colleges and what not.

I suppose it boils down to this...

Kyokushin is a contact martial art with unique tournaments based on the style.

If you suck at the tournaments, then you probably suck at the style.

If you're destroying everyone at your belt level, then you probably need to move to the next belt level.

A lot of places don't have tournaments though. We've got to go all the way up to Maryland just to test, so that doesn't make it any easier either.

Shotokan vs. Kyokushin who will win? 6-8 years to get 1st dan? damn that ruins my dream of getting my black belt in kyokushin, that and the fact that there are no schools in the orlando area.
