Guy Who Pays the Bills and Gets the Death Threats Style: MMA (Retired)--
I'd think there is a lot of merit in Sumo throws, especially in no-gi grappling as they're taking into account being slippery from sweat and not wearing a gi.

When I was in Okinawa in 2001, they had a bunch of Marines from one of the camp's wrestling teams go up against a group of sumo students in a friendly match. Many of the sumo students were in good shape and I think overall it ended up being slightly in their favor but with pretty equal standings at the end.
A cool little fact I just learned today from reading The Sabaki Method: there's a Grand Champion (one of only 65) by the name of Chiyonofuji who holds the record for most career wins at 1,045. He weighed in at only 250 pounds yet routinely beat opponents 500+ with his techniques. Goes to show you they definitely are effective.
Cool find, I like it. -

I'm necromancing this thread a bit, just in case anyone sees it.
This is another thread I previously created, which contains other Judo clips of Korean Champ Ki-Young Jeon if you haven't seen them already
http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=46995
... and additional Judo clips (Neil Adams and Brian Jones), here:
http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=47075
I have a feeling all these three threads are related and can provide a nice "cross-study"... at least that's what the PM-based feedback has been :)Read this for flexibility and injury prevention, this, this and this for supplementation, this on grip conditioning, and this on staph. New: On strenght standards, relationships and structural balance. Shoulder problems? Read this.
My crapuous vlog and my blog of training, stuff and crap. NEW: Me, Mrs. Macho and our newborn baby.
New To Weight Training? Get the StrongLifts 5x5 program and Rippetoe's "Starting Strength, 2nd Ed". Wanna build muscle/gain weight? Check this article. My review on Tactical Nutrition here.
t-nation - Dissecting the deadlift. Anatomy and Muscle Balancing Videos.
The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris -
Style: Judo--
Those sumo throws are really cool! So does anyone know if is sumo the kind of thing the Japanese do for fun? I always thought it was just a spectator sport and not really practiced recreationally.
Also, I train Judo with Brian Jones!! That very guy, man. Weird.
He has a seoi-nage that feels like getting sucked in to a jet engine... =)
Any questions you want me to ask him.. ? -
