The decline of effective Aikido....began with the creation of Aikido

Maybe aikido should be what it intend to be... tertiary martial education.

I mean, it should only be open to people who already got black belts in one or two other martial art (e.g., Karate, kendo or judo) like it was in the good old days.

To keep myself in perspective, I mentality classify my judo as physical conditioning/atheletism vis-a-vis my yoshinkan aikido as Goshin-jutsu.

"The Way of the Warrior has been misunderstood. It is not a means to kill and destroy others. Those who seek to compete and better one another are making a terrible mistake. To smash, injure, or destroy is the worst thing a human being can do. The real Way of a Warrior is to prevent such slaughter - it is the Art of Peace, the power of love."

Attempting to prevent such slaughter with "peace and love" tends to bring neither. However, the thought is typical of the very unrealistic approach to conflict preached by those who wear Magic Pants.

Yes but in combat how cool would it be to do the flippy wrist locky thing?

Hah! Take that Taliban, I will wrist flip you into the democratic process!

PS - I'm also curious when Aikido was effective, outside of a Seagull film that is.

I don't entirely agree. I think it should be open to everybody, but if you want to advance past shodan or nidan, then I think crosstraining in another art for a specified period of time should be a requirement.

Thats how you know your art sucks. You need to be good at something else before getting a BB so you can represent without looking too foolish!

Yes well, he is still a great actor! In the scene above he's comparing the size of his gun to the size of his love gun.
