Maybe aikido should be what it intend to be... tertiary martial education.

I mean, it should only be open to people who already got black belts in one or two other martial art (e.g., Karate, kendo or judo) like it was in the good old days.

To keep myself in perspective, I mentality classify my judo as physical conditioning/atheletism vis-a-vis my yoshinkan aikido as Goshin-jutsu.

Attempting to prevent such slaughter with "peace and love" tends to bring neither. However, the thought is typical of the very unrealistic approach to conflict preached by those who wear Magic Pants.

PS - I'm also curious when Aikido was effective, outside of a Seagull film that is.

I don't entirely agree. I think it should be open to everybody, but if you want to advance past shodan or nidan, then I think crosstraining in another art for a specified period of time should be a requirement.
