    Armbar in Self Defence

This may be a bit of a dumb question, but if you were attacked by, say, a mugger on the street and maneuvered them into a 'regular' armbar, would you just pull their arm back as far as it went and then stand up?

Is it likely to literally break someone's arm with an armbar if you complete it? Is there a strong chance it will permanently cripple them? Can someone potentially still beat you if their arm has been "barred"?

I ask because I am but a poor ignorant striker who loves armbars and I was wondering - if you armbar someone fully, are they likely to be "out of the fight" enough for me to just stand up, or should I hold onto their arm and boot to the head/mount punch them for a KO or something first in order to be safe?

Thanks for your advice, sorry if this wierd thread spoils the pristine grappler's board. ;)

EDIT: Aha! Moved to YMAS. Why am I not surprised? ;)

Well Royce Gracie Broke Jason Deluca's arm, so its been proven beyond any doubt that armbars break elbows. As for after you've mangled their elbow I guess it comes down to the person and their current state. If they're high on pcp then a broken elbow probably wont stop them but for a normal person I'd imagine it would be pretty tramatic.

I guess if you broke their elbow and they didn't quit you could just remount and go from from there.

yes, you can permanently damge someone's arm with an armbar. It is a structural attack, not one based purely on pain compliance. I have seen arms dislocated and/or broken in this submission personally.
There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you. I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain. I will use my mistakes against you. There's no other choice.

Thats whats so great about submissions. Even if the guy were high on pcp and didnt feel the pain, if you break hs arm he cant hit with that one anymore. Then you just armbar the other one cause its hard to defend with only one arm left. The guy may be out of his mind but he cant hurt you swing a broken arm.
