I could go on for hours about the topic (it's my second research interest after eating disorder prevention).
Problem - most of the research shows that modern martial arts doesn't have a prosocial effect.
Problem (in my opinion) - most of the researchers trained in traditional arts and never tried to adapt modern arts to a therapeutic context. -

There is actually a physiological reason that MA, or any physical activity for that matter, helps relieve stress. During physical activity the body releases endorphins (don't hold me to that name), that relieve pain and stress.
Beating up your sparring partner acutally makes you healthy! -
