MA has always been an excellent outlet for me. You find friends at class, conversation, excerise and violence.

Martial Arts should be in every school. It would give kids a much more controlled method of venting themselves. If schools could figure out a way to make money off MAs, MAs would be available starting at kindergraden.

    DAMMIT!! Beat me to it.

All I can add, I guess, is that you'll find very few depressed Dog Brothers. For the NoHo clan, every Saturday is stress relief!

I could go on for hours about the topic (it's my second research interest after eating disorder prevention).

Problem - most of the research shows that modern martial arts doesn't have a prosocial effect.

Problem (in my opinion) - most of the researchers trained in traditional arts and never tried to adapt modern arts to a therapeutic context.

There is actually a physiological reason that MA, or any physical activity for that matter, helps relieve stress. During physical activity the body releases endorphins (don't hold me to that name), that relieve pain and stress.

Beating up your sparring partner acutally makes you healthy!

Has anybody here actually suffered from depression and cured it with MA or are you all just thinking "I had a bad day once and MA helped me out. Therefore, people who have serious chemical imbalances in their brains will also be cured with MA."?

No way dude. At least for me, it's a stress reliever, specially after working an entire day surrounded by morons... I hate my co-workers.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris
