Anterior/Posterior Fusion - Thursday
I have a herniated disk and degenerative spine/vertibrae in L5 S1.
I have been through everything else.
If this goes right I should be able to go back to the gym by January.
Back on the mat getting submitted by spring.
Has anyone else had this surgery or know someone that has recently?

RULE #1 == DO NOT **** AROUND WITH THIS.
I had back surgery but not exactly the same as you. I needed a bigger sciatic nerve channel in my pelvis. It sucked, but now that I'm fully healed there's no problems. I can lift, grapple, whatever.
I'd say listen to the doc, see the phisio, and even if you have to shell out $$$ see a sports medicine specialist. Example - my doc said no lifting, the phiscal therapist said it should be ok, the sports med doc said I'd be fine, told me why, and told me what to watch out for. I wish to **** he was in-plan, but it was worth the cost.
also - yoga really helped me with regaining flexability. You can't make people smarter. You can expose them to information, but your responsibility stops there.

I didn't get it, but went with holistic methods instead. Are you experiencing nerve pain in your legs that give you less than 100 percent use of them?
I feel for you bro. :(

How are things going for you now?
I have been through everything for about 7 months now and just want it fixed.
Nothing else is working.
I did 10 minutes on the treadmill walking and was laid up for 3 days.
Hitman, if that would work I would use it myself :D

Sorry for resurrecting my own thread.
I was wanting any insight from someone who has had Fusion surgery on lower back and exercises they liked and/or had problems with.
Things so far are going good but slow... I am very impatient.
I just started lifting again, lightly, also trying to increase my cardio.
It has been 11 months since serious gym work.
I have gained 30Lbs.
I am still waiting till Spring or Summer to start rolling again, depending on progress.
looking for new place too.

I'm looking at similar surgery/fusion so I'm interested to hear how you get on. I hope it all goes well for you. You write that you hope to get back to training post-op. I've been told that I can forget about practising karate after I have my surgery as I could undo any good that results from the op. I'd be keen to hear from others who have undergone this procedure and whether or not they have been able to train.
Either way, I wish you all the best for your operation and sincerely hope that you do indeed get back to training. Please keep me posted.
