I trained in Bujinkan from 1984 to 1994 actively and achieved sandan. Back then the training in the dojo was a lot of fun and we were encouraged to make the techniques our own and be effective. But most of the other dojos merely followed Hatsumi like zombies without thinking or understanding the techniques or philosophy. After being inactive for many years I went back to Bujinkan to see how it had developed. And I was shocked to see that it had become even worse than in the early 90´s. It is a personality cult around Hatsumi. Even the high ranked people think they have to go to Japan several times a year in order to develop. In fact, they are imitating Hatsumi most of the time. The soke, I have heard, claims to have many new things to teach his students. And he now and then says that, previously I did not show the real thing, but now I will. 10 dan has increased to 15 dan. More grades, more money. Great business. But there are also persons who never cared for the circus around Hatsumi and kept away and trained hard. I used to be one of those persons.

Not that it really matters -- but grades above judan are free.

Tanemura and Manaka left Bujinkan for various reasons. Manaka Sensei wrote on e-budo forums that Bujinkan now is "Hatsumi Ryu". It is not so much about traditional techniques and budo philosophy, but more about Hatsumi´s version of it. I don´t think there´s anything wrong with that. But I think that a true student of Hatsumi should do like him. Learn the basics and then develop his own version of the art instead of worshipping Hatsumi! It is so lame.

I think you can order them directly from Hatsumi. :sleepy1:

Good question.

I suspect not... but don't know for sure. I know you don't have to go do Japan to get your Judan - so it stands to reason you don't need to go to get rank above judan...
