While I can't comment on the videos (I have no experience with the buj), but Sean Askew does not appear in either Sherdog or Subfighter as a professional MMA competitor. The only place in Google search that he appears is in relation to the buj.

Those videos demonstrate everything that is wrong with the Bujinkan; none of those techniques could ever actually work against someone who is actively resisting and fighting back. Only drunken idiots punch like that, and nobody who wants to hurt you reacts to kicks and joint locks in that manner.
Not once are the techniques ever demonstrated in a dynamic “alive” manner. They are instead all done against completely compliant partners following the script and using a “broken rhythm” demonstration style. -

Those guys in the video punch like I do. But then again, I really suck ass.
Really, the positions that those guys are in before the technique is applied is so bad, even I could make up something on the spot to take em down, etc. This is exactly why I quit TMA's.
That and getting my ass beat. -

All the techniques in the first video: all the partner has to do is drive forward when the person performing the defense pulls back and they take him down and end up in side control. I'm talking just tackle him, not even with good technique. Seriously, why would you ever do that?

His sucess in professional fights probably has more to do with being a black belt in Kosen Judo and training MMA under Enson Inoue.

If the person who teaches a technique is tough, shouldnt we at least consider it?
I mean yea , if the person resists the technique, it makes it substantially harder. But by that line of reasoning, ive never pulled up a kimura in closed guard, and hence the technique sucks.
Also by the last sequence of that first vid. While the punches sucked. He had a double grip on the sleeve and then performed the technique when his opponent pulled back.
Sometimes also, you dont have the presence of mind to tackle the guy when he steps back. Even if its impossible to tackle him when he does step back.

Edit: while the grip is different in this clip, and theres no kick. Arguably the kick is to bring his head down. And the judoka already had his head down. The lock is the same (elbow lock). So the technique in this video demonstrate about the same principle.Last edited by MartialArtN00b; 9/22/2006 7:29pm at .
